In a recent post, I said:
[My wife] can’t set up her own voicemail messages or forward unanswered calls…separate from mine. With Ooma, we are forced to share those features[.]
It turns out that that she can have her own voicemail inbox. There’s a whole series of steps you need to take to make this happen, and the order of the steps isn’t strictly orthogonal. Nevertheless, here’s one sequence to get it done with the obsolete Ooma Hub and Ooma Scout.
- Buy an Ooma Scout unless you already have one. You can still find some for sale, just not directly from Ooma.
- Sign up for Ooma Premier (currently around $99 per year). The basic service is free, but you need Premiere to be able to set up additional numbers.
- Buy a personal number add-on for $4.99 per month. This isn’t the actual number; it’s just an allocation for one. You’ll choose the number itself later.
- Attach the Ooma Hub to a wall jack, and the Ooma Scout to another wall jack. If you’re a masochist—or you just can’t find another conveniently-accessible wall jack—you can also hand-build an RJ-11 crossover cable to connect the two devices together. I ended up having to do the latter.
- From the Phone Number Preferences screen, select “Add a personal device” to link the Scout to your account. You will need the serial number of your add-on device to complete this process, and the login should be separate from the main account.
- Go to the Phone Numbers tab, and select “Add a new phone number” for the new device.
- Make sure you select a different ring pattern for the second line. You don’t have to, of course, but figuring out which line is ringing might otherwise be confusing.
- Call the new number from the line attached to the Scout to provision the Scout’s voicemail box.
Whew! Still harder than it needs to be, but it’s at least possible. It even took less time than trying to set up a magicJack…but that’s a tale of woe for another time.
